There will probably never be another long-lasting version like 1.7 was.
Minecraft modding 1.9 fluid blocks mod#
It's faster just to build a mod from the ground up than to try to fix the old shit. 1.8 changed so much, it's hardly worth trying to port. They've had a long-standing version (1.7.10) to develop stable packs on, and that's all nice, however it's been terrible for mod authors. Ever since 1.8.0 came out in 2014, it has been very good for modpack authors. If your currently modding for 1.9.4, that means you'll have a jump-start on the 1.10 port. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and we're stuck in this sort of limbo while the mods are being split between 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9. If you're still on 1.7.10, I just have one thing to say to you, and that is why not in December? If all the mod authors currently active for 1.7.10 focused on 1.8.9 development back in December, we would have stable and full 1.9 packs by now. If you're already on 1.8.9 but fear porting to 1.9.4, it's not that bad at all, just try it. There's absolutely no reason to stick with 1.7.10 or 1.8.9 at the moment. 1.9.4 mods will be trivial at worst to port to 1.10. This 1.10 prerelease has kinda popped up out of nowhere, but I think I am glad about this. I'll start this simple: Modders, please mod for 1.9.4.

I made a post about this in December or so about this exact topic for 1.8.9, and about how the shift to 1.8.9 was a good step in the community because it allowed people to rethink their mods and truly make them better, but the whole 1.9 and 1.10 scenario is very interesting so I wanted to make a post about this as well. Preface: This post is mainly directed at modders, but anyone can have a read if they want to.
